The Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU) was founded in 2002 to unite smallholder coffee farmers in Ethiopia’s renowned Yirgacheffe region and give them direct access to international specialty coffee markets. Today, the union represents approximately 46,000 farmers through 28 member cooperatives located across the Gedeo Zone, including Yirgacheffe, Gedeb, Kochere, Wonago, Bule, and Dilla Zuria. Its network of washing stations and processing mills enables exceptional quality control, traceability, and consistent processing standards. As a farmer-owned cooperative, YCFCU is democratically governed by elected representatives from its member cooperatives, ensuring that decisions and profits benefit the growers themselves. The union is widely recognized for its commitment to sustainability, promoting shade-grown coffee, protecting Ethiopia’s native forests, and adhering to internationally recognized certifications such as Organic, Fairtrade, and Rainforest Alliance. Premiums earned through these programs have funded schools, roads, clean water projects, and other community initiatives. YCFCU also promotes fairness and inclusion by supporting farmer education, encouraging participation by women, and ensuring members share equitably in the value created by their exceptional coffees. Today, YCFCU is regarded as one of Ethiopia’s premier specialty coffee organizations, combining outstanding cup quality with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
