Spanning three generations, N J Douek is steeped in family tradition and guided by the same core values: sustainability, quality, and meaningful relationships.

Nessim Joseph Douek was from that school and culture that believed that business could be done on a handshake. A skilled international merchant, Nessim was already forging relationships in the 1930s and 1940s with producers of various commodities around the globe. Trading from Hong Kong and then Japan before settling in Montreal in 1951, Nessim quickly established his reputation for quality and reliability. Importing primarily coffee and tea in the 1950s, he would eventually focus on the growing needs of coffee roasters in the U.S. and Canada
Nessim's vision and values were carried forward by his son, Raoul Douek, who expanded the company's reach while maintaining the tradition of personalized service and strong partnerships. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Raoul continued to forge trusted relationships with both coffee producers at origin and roasters across North America, helping to solidify N.J. Douek's reputation for reliability, quality, and integrity in the green coffee trade.

Building on this legacy, the third generation, Philip Douek, brought new energy and adaptability to meet the changing demands of the modern coffee industry. As the specialty coffee movement gained momentum, Philip embraced the industry's evolving expectations around quality, traceability, and producer transparency. Understanding that today's roasters operate with more sophisticated technology and a deeper appreciation for coffee's origins, Philip worked to strengthen the company's relationships with coffee producers around the world — recognizing that true traceability is built on genuine, long-term partnerships.
Today, N.J. Douek continues to evolve with the specialty coffee landscape, offering carefully sourced, traceable coffees that meet the high standards of modern roasters, while remaining grounded in the traditions of trust, service, and quality established nearly 75 years ago.
