Located in the Peñas Blancas massif in the Jinotega region, Finca Sonora reflects the continuity of a coffee tradition spanning three generations. The project traces its origins back to the mid-20th century, when Denis Anastasio García’s grandfather began cultivating staple crops on a small plot of land. Over time, the family expanded its experience by working in the coffee sector in Matagalpa, before returning to their original lands to focus on specialty coffee production. Today, under Denis García’s direction, the farm and family group have grown to approximately 60 manzanas, with coffee planted at elevations above 1,200 meters. Production includes a mix of traditional and higher-value varieties such as Catuai, Parainema, Maracaturra, Obata, Arara, as well as microlots of Geisha and Bourbon, all developed under SCA standards and evaluated by certified Q Graders. The operation is supported by a workforce of around 100 pickers during harvest and approximately 20 workers during the maintenance season, contributing to local employment and ensuring continuity in farm management throughout the year. Beyond production, Finca Sonora stands out for its focus on sustainability and diversification. Agricultural practices prioritize soil health, water conservation and ecosystem protection, while complementary crops such as bananas, citrus, guava and avocados contribute to a more resilient farming system. With Organic, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certifications, the project reflects an integrated approach where quality, environmental responsibility and community well-being evolve together.
