PROCAFE is a coffee cooperative based in the municipality of San Juan del Río Coco, in the department of Madriz, northern Nicaragua. Founded in 2001, it began as a grassroots initiative among smallholder farmers seeking better access to markets, direct commercialization of their coffee, and improved services on their farms. Today, the cooperative brings together over 170 members, with strong participation from women producers. Coffee is grown on family-owned plots located between 900 and 1,350 meters above sea level, in mountainous areas with fertile soils and favorable growing conditions. Commonly cultivated varieties include Catimor, Bourbon, Catuai, and Pache—selected for their adaptability and cup quality. Most of the coffee is processed using the washed method and sun-dried, with an emphasis on maintaining traceability and consistency across lots. Beyond production, PROCAFÉ provides technical support, promotes sustainable farming practices, and invests in community well-being through health initiatives, reforestation, and crop diversification programs. Thanks to this integrated approach, the cooperative has built long-term relationships with specialized markets, offering certified coffees that reflect the region’s identity and the commitment of the farming families behind them.
