Finca Lum is a family-driven farm led by Honorio, Carmen, and their three children—Loreth, Paulina, and Marcelo—reflecting a strong generational commitment to coffee production and sustainability. With production ranging from 800,000 to 1,000,000 quintales (100-pound bags), the farm integrates efficient and environmentally responsible practices. Its micro-mill features a Penagos ecological module that reduces water consumption, while cherries are harvested at peak ripeness. Renovation efforts have introduced rust-resistant varieties, and soil health is maintained through composting systems, bioferments, and regular soil analysis. Agropecuaria Lum is one of several organically certified farms within AFAORCA, an association of coffee producers founded in 1996 that brings together multi-generational farming families from the Tarrazú region, known for its long-standing coffee tradition. Operating under the name Eco Caraigres, the association represents farms across the Caraigres mountain range, a region recognized for Cerro del Fuego (“Hill of Fire”) and its distinctive natural landscape. AFAORCA upholds quality and transparency as core values. AFAORCA provides technical support in organic production and quality control, while also facilitating commercialization in international markets through logistics and export management. This long-term collaboration, spanning more than 15 years, has strengthened traceability and transparency. Over time, the producers have adopted a more sustainable approach, implementing manual weed control and shaded coffee systems in the Occidental Valley, alongside diversified crops and timber species that support a balanced ecosystem.
