Costa Rica San Rafael Tarrazú comes from about 1,300 producer families in the Tarrazú region, south of San José. Caturra and Catuai thrive here, where high altitudes, abundant sunlight, and moisture from the Pacific trapped by the Talamanca Sierra create ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. The coffee is processed at NKG Beneficio Palmichal, operated by NKG Ceca S.A., and carefully sorted to meet Strictly Hard Bean standards. Tarrazú is world-renowned for exceptional cup quality. In 2019, it earned Denomination of Origin (DOE) status, similar to Champagne in France, though the certification now applies to only part of the traditional production area. Ceca and Palmichal source coffee from over 2,000 growers across Los Santos, with facilities strategically located between Tarrazú and the Central Valley for optimal cherry reception and traceability. The Palmichal Micro Mill, built in 2015, allows separation of unique lots and supports innovation in processing, including honey and natural methods. In 2016, Palmichal also launched a nursery project with 350,000 seedlings of rust-resistant varieties to support long-term sustainability.
