Baroida Estate is located in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, in the Aiyura Valley near Kainantu. Established in the 1960s by Ben Colbran, a New Zealand native who pioneered coffee farming in the region, the estate has become a reference point for specialty coffee production in the country. Initially starting with vegetables and a small sawmill to support his long-term goal, Colbran eventually built one of the most respected coffee farms in the Highlands. Today, the estate is owned and managed by Ben’s son, Nichol Colbran, who has lived on the farm since childhood and took over its operations in 1997. The farm spans approximately 220 hectares, divided into 29 plots, each planted with a specific variety—primarily Arusha and Typica, along with smaller lots of Bourbon, Mundo Novo, and Blue Mountain. Located at altitudes ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 meters above sea level, the estate practices a fully washed process, with great attention to sorting, fermentation, and drying. Beyond the estate itself, Colbran Coffeelands supports surrounding smallholders by offering access to processing facilities and technical guidance. Many of these small farms range from 0.25 to 4 hectares. The family also plays an active role in community development by supporting local infrastructure, education, and healthcare initiatives. The continuity of the Colbran family’s involvement, along with a strong focus on quality and local engagement, has helped shape Baroida Estate into one of Papua New Guinea’s most established and community-connected coffee projects.
