In the mountains of Huehuetenango, one of Guatemala’s three non-volcanic regions, coffee thrives under a unique microclimate shaped by warm air from Mexico mixing with the cool currents of the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes. It was in this environment that Asobagri (Asociación Barillense de Agricultores) was founded by small producers, achieving its first export in 1999. Since then, it has become one of the country’s most recognized cooperatives, exporting certified organic and Fairtrade coffees to international markets. Today, Asobagri brings together hundreds of families from 87 communities across Huehuetenango and Quiché, many of them led by women and young farmers. Their plots, located between 1,150 and 1,650 masl, grow in fertile clay-loam soils under diversified shade. Certifications such as Organic, Fairtrade, Bird Friendly®, Café Femenino, and the Small Producers’ Symbol reflect its commitment to sustainability and equity. Asobagri’s coffees are noted not only for their bright, complex, fruity profiles but also for their social impact, offering alternatives to poverty and migration while showing how coffee can drive community development and conservation.
