This coffee comes from the main coffee-growing regions of Uganda and is handled by Kyagalanyi Coffee Limited, a private company dedicated to coffee sourcing, processing and export, and recognised as one of the country’s long-standing actors in the sector. Founded in 1992, during the liberalisation of Uganda’s coffee market, the company operates as a subsidiary of Volcafe and forms part of an international coffee trading network. Kyagalanyi works with both Robusta and Arabica coffees, conventional and certified, in washed and natural processes, sourced from Uganda’s main producing regions, and directly connects smallholder farmers with international markets. At the same time, it implements sustainability programmes with farming communities in Mount Elgon, Greater Rwenzori and Greater Masaka, focusing on farm productivity, coffee quality, climate-change adaptation and social risk management, in a country where coffee—mainly Robusta alongside high-altitude Arabicas—remains a key pillar of the rural economy. During the coffee wilt disease crisis that severely affected Uganda’s coffee sector in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the company actively supported rehabilitation programmes, promoting the adoption of more resistant Robusta varieties and contributing to the recovery of affected farms.
