This coffee comes from the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea and is sourced and exported by New Guinea Highlands Coffee Exports (NGHCE), one of the country’s leading coffee exporters. Established in 1992 and integrated into the Neumann Kaffee Gruppe in 1996, the company is headquartered in Goroka, in the Eastern Highlands Province, at the heart of Papua New Guinea’s main coffee-growing region. Coffee production in Papua New Guinea is largely driven by smallholder farmers. Coffee trees are typically planted in family gardens alongside food crops and cared for as part of everyday rural life. Around 99% of producers are smallholders, with an average farm size of approximately 0.83 hectares and a very small annual output, often close to ten bags per household. Production takes place in remote areas where access to infrastructure remains limited. As centralized wet mills are rare, producers usually pulp, ferment, wash and dry their coffee at home before selling small volumes of parchment through roadside buying points or mobile collectors. NGHCE plays a key role in transforming this highly fragmented supply into consistent export coffees through grading and quality control, structuring both commercial and specialty lots. Through farmer extension teams, the company supports productivity, quality, sustainability and certification programmes, while facilitating access to international specialty markets. Papua New Guinea Grade A coffees are typically recognised for their uniform appearance, low defect levels and a clean, balanced cup profile.
