Arabica futures ended the final session of the week, and on options expirations, without much fanfare. The active December contract finished the session down 90 points while back month deliveries settled the session slightly higher. Pressure is evident on the December contract as it approaches its Delivery Period on Monday November 21st, as long positions must be rolled out prior to the end of the previous session to avoid any unwanted deliveries. The December /March spread continues to come under pressure, and more so today, as pending stocks for Exchange Certification continue to rise at a quick pace. These are not new certifications but rather old de-certified coffees, coming back in the system. Present FOB differentials do not make new crop or past arrivals economically feasible for new certifications. This week alone “Pending Certified” have increased approximately 300,000 bags for a total of 456,000 pending grading. Volumes continues to stay strong, and we expect volumes to spike next week as traders get ready for the upcoming December First Notice Day. From Brazil, good rains continue to be reported as well as in the forecast for next week, and to note, because of these heavy rains, more and more reports of widespread hailstorms continue to be reported.

Coffee futures recovered today in a session that was mostly fueled macro by a small recovery in the USA inflation rate. This resulted pushed the dollar down 2.20%+ giving strength to origin currencies and therefore helping commodities
prices rally. Fundamentally in coffee, weather in Brazil is still expecting good rains that should help the flowering process. Reported directly from CECAFE, Brazil exported 2.8% less coffee in October compared to 2022. Tomorrow we have option expiration for December NY Coffee. NY coffee Dec/Mar switch settled at 3.30 over with 15k switches done for the day. The most active contract vs March settled at 167.70 +5.35 with a total volume of 69k lots traded in the session. Technically NY coffee should be looking at resistance levels at 168.55 and 169.60 |
